About Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been serving the area's homeless population in various capacities for more than 30 years.
Formed in 1986 by local clergy, laypeople, and citizens, the organization was a response to the growing homeless population. Formerly known as "Okaloosa Coalition on the Homeless," the mission was operated entirely by volunteer staff until 1998 when it became a United Way Agency, which helped fund the needs for staff and operations.
In 2005, the organization changed its name to "FRESH Start for Children and Families." to more accurately reflect the shift in the program's focus to helping homeless families. FRESH is an acronym for Freedom, Respect, Education, Safety, and Hope). The mission of Fresh Start is to share love and compassion through a comprehensive educational, vocational, and economic housing program to help homeless families achieve self-sufficiency.
